My Big Idea

Today is the day of my Irish book launch, everyone! I am completely nervous, especially as My Family will be there: loving, supportive and in my mother's case, possibly adjusting my neckline. Wish me luck!

Before I tell you all my Big Idea (TM) I have a couple more links for you, otherwise known as Sarah Rees Brennan, ladies and gentleman, wittering all over the internet.

We Are Walking Over Bones: Building A Magical England - me talking about world-building.

Not actually me at all, but look - my book is the header for my German publishers' website! I love it, and my German publisher. (Can anyone tell me what it says...? ETA: It says 'Summon the demons, but control them! The amazing debut of a young fantasy author. Breathtaking suspense with Sarah Rees Brennan.' Kids, summon demons! I like Random House Germany's style. :))

I was also embarrassingly pleased by this lovely review at Tor.com, which is full of spoilers, do not click if you have not read!

And finally, over at bittenbybooks.com, who have also given me a wonderful review, we're having an interview, online Q&A party, and giveaway with goodie bags. Live Now!

Now for My Big Idea.

As we all know, these are tricky economic times, and one of the luxuries about the place are hardback books. Which makes this an extreeeeemely nervous time for me as a New Writer who nobody knows of to buy. (Well, aside from you guys, for whom I am deeply and always thankful.)

However it would be pretty yucky of me, not to mention rather dull, to wander around playing on my tiny violin to the tune of 'Buuuuuy myyyy book.' Nobody likes the tinny sound of that little violin, anyway.

But I thought I could do something else that is proactive, and rather fun.

I have My Sources of knowing how the book is doing, and I thought I could keep track. (ETA: This only applies to the American/Canadian hardcover, as it is the only one I know how to get numbers for.) And if one week the book is at a certain number (which I will tell a friend, who will not allow me to cheat, and which will not be too high because, well, hard times, I am not with the crazy optimism) then I will write and put up a short story.

Next week, if it's the number again, the same.

Next week, the same.

Another week, number drops, I don't write a story, no harm, no foul.

I am a little nervous about this idea. Partly because I fear if I implement it, I will never sleep again. Partly because I fear it will look like holding people hostage for my short stories, or something.

But I did think that it might be fun, and a way to celebrate good numbers should they happen, and as a thank you to people which might be nice for them. And as something that might make people think 'Hmmm, I need a gift for someone - oh hey, it would be also be good to have something to read next week' and 'Maybe I'll wait for paperback - oh wait, I could probably use something to read in the office next week, maybe I'll pick it up now' which might be nice for me.

Plus some more people might come along and go 'oh hey, story' and then 'I would like a new story plus I might like the book, to the Batmobile, away!' And that would be nice for everyone, even Batman.

So possibly all-around a win.

Plus I am firmly of the opinion that free content 1) sells books and 2) is awesome, and thought it might be a good way to prove this.

So that's what I'm doing, starting now. The first short story may be up this day week!

I am currently thinking, though different opinions are welcome, stories would be set in The Demon's Lexicon universe but contain no spoilers, as I love my tiny extremely nice fandom and how everyone's trying not to spoil the Australians and others who can't get it. If you'd like different kinds of stories, please tell me so! If you have specific ideas on what kind of stories in The Demon's Lexicon universe you'd like, please tell me that too.

In fact, any ideas on My Big Idea, I would love to hear.

The German header says: "Call/Summon the demons, but control them! The great/fantastic debut of a young fantasy author. Breathtaking suspense with Sarah Rees Brennan." :)

Awesome, thank you so much! And I like the tag line... and how it's encouraging people to be evil magicians. ;) I love Random House Germany's style.

Fantastic idea, how does one find out about book sales, I will look into it and later, when we have the book, let you know how NZ is doing. Given that everyone I know has heard how excellent it will be.

For the record, as one of those Australians who is trying to do the right thing and support local publishers - thanks everyone for the non-spoiler approach :)

And since Im already telling all my friends and local bookshops to get your book Im all for the short stories as an added bonus!

Yes, here's for not spoiling the Australians! And I would love to get a taste for your D.L. world soon as possible.

Two thumbs up for Big Idea.

I finished my copy this weekend and enjoyed it very much!

Can I ask when the Japanese release date is, if it's set? I love reading Japanese translations of novels I've read in English, as I get a kick out of seeing how the character speech patterns turn out (plus the Arakawa cover art is a great bonus), so I'll be buying it again when it comes out here in Japan. :)

The Japanese edition has been out since April, so I think all you have to do is walk into a bookshop - oh, gosh, and if you do, please tell me about the Character List they have in their edition. I am overcome with curiosity about it.

And I am very glad you liked it!

I think your Big Idea is an excellent one, and that it may also give you motivation as a writer as well! Who knows what amazing genius could come from those short stories?

Still reading, btw. About halfway through, so appreciating no spoilers here as well. :)

I think it's a great idea.

Are you only counting hardback sales towards the number?
sarahtales
Jun. 18th, 2009 02:38 pm (UTC)
Yes. Hardcover sales are the tricky ones, and the American/Canadian numbers are the only ones I know how to get.

Which is not to say that buying any other edition is not HUGELY appreciated, because, dude, it is. ;)

I approve of this plan.

I must admit to a certain fascination with Mae's t-shirts, although I do not imagine that there could be a whole story about those.

I am also willing to entertain the sorts of wild, off-the-wall, and wacky ideas you have that may not fit into anything that you consider marketable.

Eee. I feel really flattered that you liked the tor.com review. I was sekritly thinking about giving you the link and then decided that it was too much like saying "lookit meeeeee". (I might have asked specifically if I could do your book...maybe:)

I'm so interested in your plan! I've been arguing for ages that free content makes the author money and I really, really want to see how it goes for you. Please keep us updated! (And also yay free DL stories! Whee)

Heh, I was linked and was most delighted!

I will definitely keep people updated! I've been really interested in John Scalzi's views on free content, and have recently been delighted by Kelley Armstrong's online novella companion to the Darkest Powers series, so I do believe in it - but who knows about the extent of the effect? Interesting times ahead!

Now you actually have me considering buying a hardcover version from the American amazon...damn it, I do not have the money for this xD

I do not buy hardcover books in any economy, as they are heavy and take up too much precious space, but I've enjoyed this blog (especially the parodies) so much I feel I've gotten a hardcover book's worth.

Unfortunately my local book store could not find any of the four copies their computers claimed to have. I've given them a couple of days; hopefully one has turned up by now.

Ironically, I was just thinking I needed to buy another copy! Mine is already looking a bit battered, and the cover has just developed some very mysterious parallel rips in the direct center. I have no idea what happened there--if the corners or edges were torn, I'd think I'd just snagged it on something. Maybe my cat took exception to Nick's presence? Except the rips look too large to be cat claws. So I just don't know.

Anyway, demonic cat possession or not, I obviously need a new copy, as I would be covered in shame if I had to ever present this poor tattered thing for you to sign at an event some day. And then my brother needs a copy for his birthday, and my friend needs one just because she is having a bad week, and...

Basically, what I'm saying is that I was already planning on buying multiple copies of your book. But now I will buy them with even more excitement than I had before! SHORT STORIES! *dances with glee* I would love anything from the Demon's Lexicon universe at all, but if it is possible to keep it from being too spoilery, I would reeeeallly love something about Dark Arthur. He is maybe one of my favorite villains of all time. Actually, Dark Arthur, Anzu, and Gerald are all pretty fantastic, as far as villainy goes. But like everyone said, you should definitely not stress yourself about it! I'm sure whatever and whenever you post, all of your fans will be ecstatic.

There are hard covers? Where are these secretive beasts? Am I going to have to get my Canadian based friends to purchase of one for me?

I love your big idea, Sarah. I rarely comment (being overwhelmed by the number of other commenters), but I love reading your journal and am looking forward to reading your book (and having my sons read it as well).

You could use either the NY Times list or Amazon -- both are good indicators of the book's ranking. :-)

Are you coming to the U.S. for a book tour any time? Please let us know. ('Us' being your U.S. fans/friends.)

I like it! I was planning on buying a second copy anyway, but this very well may inspire me to purchase a hardcover instead of a ...softcover?

ETA: by softcover, I mean PAPERBACK. Wow, brain fart.
