The Big News

Well, I have several pieces of news I have been forbidden to tell you guys for some time, but now I am finally allowed to tell you one very exciting bit of news!

If you have seen me at a signing, I have probably already told you, since I have no discretion whatsoever.

Film rights to Sarah Rees Brennan’s THE DEMON’S LEXICON, about two brothers hunted by a powerful magician's circle after their mother steals a charm and when the eldest is marked by a demon, the younger must save him but unwittingly uncovers the darkest of secrets, optioned to Parallel films (Triage starring Colin Farrell) by Kassie Evashevski at United Talent Agency, on behalf of Kristin Nelson at Nelson Literary Agency.

Ally Carter has done an awesome blog post on how movies are made, and what terms mean, but basically an option is Parallel saying 'Hmm, we would like to reserve the right to think about making Demon's Lexicon into a movie. It'll be our property to make for a year or so, how about that?' And if you are me, you say 'Sure!' and are delighted.

Parallel Films is amazing, and their films include Breakfast on Pluto and Intermission both of which star Cillian Murphy. They also do TV programs and miniseries...eses, one of which is Neverland, directed by Nick Willing (who directed SyFy's Alice, my favourite miniseries of the decade). Which is to say, I think if they do make a film (or hey, TV show or a miniseries) it will be amazing, and they won't skimp on any of the dark or risky bits of the book.

So I'm thrilled! But of course, another important factor is the fact I am super curious regarding who you guys think would be good to play the characters.

Parallel seems to like working with Cillian Murphy. I must say I am all for that. He can play any role he likes.

He can play Nick. He can play Alan. He can play Mae.

See? It would be awesome.

In timing that seems meant to be, I found a fanvid for possible Demon's Lexicon casting last night, which I thought was awesome. So: tell me your thoughts, ask me your questions about the process, and show me your pictures! I'd love to know what you think, and will tell you anything I know.

This is awesome news Sarah! lets hope it makes the series go as big as harry potter or twilight! (it's certainly a better series than twilight IMO)

Hee! Deeply unlikely, but thank you for the lovely good wishes!

*laughs out loud* I like the last picture. :)
Jan. 11th, 2011 02:15 pm (UTC)
I made it with my elite skills. *modest pride*
Jan. 11th, 2011 02:14 pm (UTC)
I know he's actually waaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaay too old, but Nick has always looked like a young version of Damon in my head.

And Cillian Murphy with red hair would be EXACTLY THE ALAN I WOULD CHOOSE.
Jan. 11th, 2011 02:25 pm (UTC)
Ian Somerhalder is a pretty attractive dude, it is very true!
Jan. 11th, 2011 02:15 pm (UTC)

I'm too excited for words, let alone pictures. *g*

What fantastic news; congratulations!

nnngh cillian murphy is pretty much my absolute favourite actor in the entire world so I hope he gets cast as mae :|
Jan. 11th, 2011 02:17 pm (UTC)
I mean he's - he's definitely pretty enough to play her
Jan. 11th, 2011 02:17 pm (UTC)
OMG I KNEW IT! Massive congratulations Sarah!

Also, Cillian Murphy can do whatever he damn well pleases as far as I'm concerned. Hot damn.
Jan. 11th, 2011 02:17 pm (UTC)
Cillian Murphy FTW!!! Best actor out there.
Jan. 11th, 2011 02:17 pm (UTC)
Oh, wow!

I was just thinking how well Lexicon would translate to the screen, as it is my lunchtime-rereading book this week. The visuals are just so strong, it would look amazing!

So long as a certain spoiler is not made too obvious, anyway. I hate that the worst!

Ahhhhhh. Congratulations!

(Um, Cillian Murphy as Gerald. He may not be sandy-haired, but I DON'T CARE. Cillian Murphy as Gerald. After which I might just die. Of happiness.)
Jan. 11th, 2011 02:18 pm (UTC)
As I have so fancily just demonstrated, hair can be changed. ;)

That. Is. AWESOME. In the full and complete sense of that word. I will absolutely be on the edge of my seat, waiting (im)patiently for news that its going into preproduction. I'm so excited for you! Hey, I'm excited for *me*! If they make it, I get to watch it!

eeep very exciting!

If they decided to do it, do you know how much say you would have in things? Like, advisory type things? I know JKR got lots, SMeyer got lots, Pullman got none, which is sad.
Jan. 11th, 2011 02:22 pm (UTC)
I would imagine none, since Meyer and Rowling only got tons because they are megasuperstars, and have literal armies of thousands of fans. It'd be up to the company if they wanted to involve me at all. ;)

Ahhhhh congrats! Don't hit me, but I've always been thinking Tom Welling (because of the original cover for book 1).

I was hoping this is what the news would be!

Oh, wow! That's really amazing! I'm afraid I have no casting suggestions (other than, 'can I be in it?' *g*) since that would require me to know stuff about actors, but it's such exciting news! Congratulations!!!
Jan. 11th, 2011 02:23 pm (UTC)
Oh my God, this is such exciting news! Is it too early to ask how long it's going to be until we actually SEE this?

I totally want to see Chris Colfer as Jamie, he would be just perfect! And ever since watching Inception, I am in love with Cillian Murphy. And although Ian Somerhalder is a bit too old, I'm totally with elucreh on Nick looking like a young version of Damon.
Jan. 11th, 2011 02:28 pm (UTC)
Way too early. ;) 99.99999% of movies optioned are never made at all! But I agree, obviously, on the awesomeness of Cillian Murphy.

Sorry, I don't think there's any reaction to this news besides outright fangirling! I know that optioning the rights doesn't mean they are actually making a film, but still! Yay! And congratulations!
Now to spend the rest of my day shamelessly procrastinating by making a casting post instead of doing work....
Jan. 11th, 2011 02:28 pm (UTC)
I shall look forward to seeing it!
Jan. 11th, 2011 02:24 pm (UTC)
Congrats *____*!!!

It would be really awesome to see DL on screen~

And Cillian omg Cilliaaaaan *_* He can do whatever he likes.

Cillian Murphy as Black Arthur ftw, if only Ian Somerhalder wasn't horrendously too old to play Nick :( Do you think they'd keep it beautifully British or pack it out with young Americans?
Jan. 11th, 2011 02:28 pm (UTC)
Parallel isn't American, so I would hope they'd keep it British, but I'd be happy either way. ;)
Jan. 11th, 2011 02:24 pm (UTC)
That's not the news I was hoping for. I was getting myself hyped up for the publisher telling you that in Demon's Surrender, they thought Nick was wearing too much and you needed one last rewrite to fix this. ALAS.

At least this news is y'know, less work and more money and deserved recognition for you and your lovely characters. Whatever.
Jan. 11th, 2011 02:29 pm (UTC)
Believe me: Nick's not wearing too much in Demon's Surrender.
Jan. 11th, 2011 02:27 pm (UTC)
That is excellent news! Congratulations!

And Cillian Murphy playing a pink-haired girl? Priceless. Let's start a petition!
Jan. 11th, 2011 02:28 pm (UTC)

I could see Antonia Thomas as Sin, I think (http://28.media.tumblr.com/tumblr_le6g7rI16S1qzbnmqo1_500.png). Had some ideas for others but can't remember them at the moment.
Jan. 11th, 2011 02:30 pm (UTC)
I LOVE ANTONIA THOMAS. That is an amazing idea. She is wonderful as Alisha in Misfits.
