DEFY THE DARK

Originally published at Sarah Rees Brennan. You can comment here or there.

Two blog posts in one day, Sarah?

(Well, I like to keep you guys guessing.)

This is a cool thing that you will ENJOY, I think. There are prizes.

So, this week the anthology DEFY THE DARK was released. It is all darkly haunting tales by Rachel Hawkins, Carrie Ryan, Aprilynne Pike, Malinda Lo, Courtney Summers, Beth Revis, Sarah Ockler, and many more: I am not sure WHY I was asked, given the super cool lineup, but hey, I’ll take it. I love writing short stories! I love the screaming from my editors about the exact definition of ‘short.’

The editor was the amazing Saundra Mitchell, who is both a good friend and the author of many brilliant novels, including the just-released The Elementals, which she explains all the awesome things about better than I ever could here: http://diversityinya.tumblr.com/post/52870290826/when-there-are-no-words

It also has a story from a brand new author in it, which I think is pretty cool, as we all know there are a thousand new authors with amazing stories to tell, waiting for us to discover them.

Not only did we have a contest and chose a fabulous new author, Saundra (she can do magic, I’m telling you!) read every one of the thousands of entries and chose other authors to highlight as well. They will be at http://defythedark.com/emily-skrutskie/ and http://defythedark.com/taure-shimp/. Emily’s story is AFTER ILLUME, a ship-bound SF tale, and BOGWATER by Taure Shimp, a wonderful southern gothic.

Everyone else’s stories are super cool, guys. There’s baby spider people and creepy Southern towns. And there is my story, I Gave You My Love By the Light of the Moon, and I HOPE it’s cool.

The theme was what happens in the dark, and I love the Vampire Diaries, and a particular couple I love on that show are Tyler the angry jock werewolf and Caroline the cheerleader vampire, blonde and bubbly and bright-shining-heart-of-gold Caroline who teaches him to be a better man by being amazing and tenderly shepherding him through his supernatural chaaaanges because she knows better. I also love Vivian the lady werewolf from Annette Curtis Klause’s Blood & Chocolate, and I feel she could have lit up the life of many a gloomy fictional vampire of my acquaintance. Basically, I like vampires and I like werewolves. They’re extremely different creatures of the night, often painted as in opposition (and what’s not to love about Furry Romeo and Fangy Juliet? Maybe Edward and Jacob could have made it work together, is what I’m saying, I don’t judge…) and they both say a lot about what it means to be human.

So I wrote my story about Berthe, who loves lacrosse and camping and was just bitten by a werewolf, and the weirdo hipster she meets in a cafe.

You defy the dark by living in the dark with love. Or that’s what I was going for, anyway.

How’s about you tell me about fictional couples you enjoy–either ones that actually happened, or characters you’d like to see get together? I will enter you for a draw, and the winner will get a copy of Defy the Dark, a copy of Unspoken, wristlets and bookmarks, and my super secret extra addition… my very last ARC of Untold. (The others are earmarked for the CONTEST WINNERS, about which more soon…)

But first, let’s defy the dark, and dish on fictional couples.

I would like to see Alec and Magnus back together from The Mortal Instruments by Cassandra Clare(as you already know ;) ) They sort of HAVE to get back together or I will most likely crumble in a heap of fangirlish tears and FEELS. :)

"You defy the dark by living in the dark with love." <3 <3 <3 this.
I'm going to go with my old standby: Harry/Draco. I guess they fall under "would have liked to have seen", unless we count fanfiction. ;)

I took a wayward fit and went with Edward/Jacob, and thought about Vivian/Lestat, so this seems eminently fair. ;)

Hrrmmmmmm.... wow, this is very difficult. Too many couples, and that's just thinking of ones that actually happen. I think, for the sake of not droning on forever (and also for the sake of getting back to work), I will have to go with a classical piece and a contemporary piece.

Classical: Elizabeth Bennett and Fitzwilliam Darcy from "Pride and Prejudice," by Jane Austen: Smart people who learn and grow over the course of an intelligent narrative, with brilliantly-realized secondary characters; yes, please), with a shout-out to other Austen couples.

Contemporary: Kate Daniels and Curran (who, being a werelion and pack leader in Atlanta needs no last name, near as I can figure), from the "Magic Bites" series by Ilona Andrews: Smart, tough, characters who are a match for each other and who grow into their relationship as they learn about each other and also fight bad guys in an urban fantasy setting where magic has returned to the world with a vengeance.

Right; stopping now....

My favorite fictional couples are all couples that don't exist in canon.

Draco/Hermione
Dean/Castiel
Hank McCoy (Beast)/Raven (Mystique) <-- well, this one may be canon, but idk
Jasper/Bella <-- so over Bella/Edward

I also ship Johnlock, but not so much in a regular couple sense, but the kind of super friendship that involves cuddling and drinking tea together.

Beast/Mystique seemed canonly to me in the movie! And I always liked me the idea of some Draco/Hermione. ;)

Oh, I can't wait to read this! I've been on a short story kick ever since I read After.

My favorite fictional couple is probably Julian and Lena from Lauren Oliver's Delirium trilogy. I was not a fan of how things went for them, and I want them back together.

THIERRY AND HANNAH! LJ Smith fan fistbump. ;) Plus, Ally Carter hurrah. Mind you, I like Alina/Darkling, but well, it would be a dull world if we all shipped the same thing...

I enjoy Clary and Jace from Cassandra Clare's The Mortal Instruments. They have such sizzling chemistry and really set the benchmark for what you want in a romantic relationship. Jace literally died and all Clary wanted in the world, not caring about any consequences, was him. They would travel to the ends of the world and demon realms beyond to save the other Even alone if they had to. Like Clary in City of Lost Souls. Even in the face of her pretty terrifying brother who certainly holds the 'Worlds Worst Big Brother award,' she ventured into the lions den to save Jace. Because she loved him so much. It's such a touching and strong love they have, and I'm sincerely hoping that in City of Heavenly Fire, they're still as strong. After everything they've been through, all the hardship, they deserve their happy ending and some peace at last. Gah I just love them so much I'm melting into a puddle of feels :')

I ship SO many fictional couples and for the life of me I can't remember most of them right now...

BUT I've definitely fallen in the Stiles/Isaac ship and I cannot get up.

Other couples that have smashed my heart into tiny pieces:
-Gale/Katniss
-Stefan/Elena

THERE ARE SO MANY MORE I SWEAR.

I think Will and Tessa from The Infernal Devices by Cassandra Clare was one of my favorite ships. ALso (not trying to be an authors pet or something) but I really think Kami and Jared would make an awesome couple.

Dean and Castiel from Supernatural. Enough with the queerbaiting, show! Enough with the sly nods at Dean/Castiel fans while Castiel continues to be oblivious and Dean continues to be heterosexist and oblivious! Give us some follow-through!

I have to admit, my favourite fictional couple is Phedre no Delaunay/Joscelin Verreuil from the Kushiel's Legacy series by Jacqueline Carey. She's a god-touched sacred prostitute! He's a warrior priest sworn to chastity and her defense! THEY FIGHT EVIL!

What I love about them (and they are a canonical couple, sorry for the spoilers) is that they don't fit. Phedre is kinky and sensual by nature. Joscelin is, well, a monk. He doesn't ever really get over the oaths that he swore or the restrictions that he grew up with. Phedre at first feels like she can never fulfill her true desires because of him, and he can never truly satisfy her needs. And they compromise because of true love. They make it work, despite everything in their way and some really rough times. They walk into the mouth of hell together (once almost literally) and they come out battered and bruised but they heal and they grow more strongly together than before.

Plus this one time he spider-climbs under a bridge to rescue her from a cursed prison. If that's not romantic enough for you, I just can't help you.

Erm, sorry, I rambled...

Sarah hitting with hard questions AGAIN.

I ship Jared and Kami, but I'm wondering now if saying this will prompt you to rain more suffering upon us hmmmm

Cimorene/Mendanbar from Enchanted Forest Chronicles, Sophie/Howl from HMC, Christopher/Millie from the Chrestomani Chronicles, Anna/Etienne from Anna and The French Kiss, Amy/Elder fom Across the Universe, Annana/Naji from The Assassin's Curse OH GOD I DONT KNOW I CAN'T LOST THEM ALL

Woe is me.

Oh no wait: Cupid/Psyche. That's a ship right third ;)

Jasper and Alice from Twilight who seemed to be the most real characters as well as the most romantic with their relationship based on respect

Also strangely enough Jamie and Cersei from GoT. Their relationship is fairly deep. Also Arya and Gendry

Oops accidentally anonymous.

Jasper/Alice being the most real characters in that series

Jamie/Cersei for complicated reasons. Arya/Gendry

But really I love all the ships

Strangely enough, Tiny Cooper and Will Grayson. But not the one he dates in the book. The other one - his best friend. Or, really, Tiny Cooper and anyone. Tiny Cooper and the world - I ship it.

My first thought is Alanna/George from Tamora Pierce's Lioness quartet. While I loved the somewhat-desperate-I-love-you's between Jon and Alanna, Alanna/George taught me that the basis of a good relationship is someone who can make you laugh, and someone who accepts you as you are. I look for that in every fictional and real relationship I see (and tend to find it in many of your books, which always makes me extremely happy).

Okay, while I do (more or less) have a soul (more or less) and therefore am quite fond of Darcy and Elizabeth, my favorite among Austen's couples is actually Anne Elliott and Frederick Wentworth from Persuasion, which is my favorite of her novels. There's just something about the second chancyness of the whole thing that appeals to me, though I'm not a romantic in my real life. :)

Probably my favorite fictional romance of all time is from Megan Whalen Turner's Queen's Thief books, because my love for Eugenides/Irene knows no bounds, but Sin/Alan is a strong contender, especially in the category Oh Nooo Darlings Nooo! (Apparently I have a weakness for people who tell lots of lies. I guess Noo Darlings Noo is also a weakness of mine...)

While thinking about this, I realized that somehow... I hadn't actually gotten super-shippy over a couple in a long time. (At least, not a couple that didn't involve my player character in some way, a la Bioware games.) Huh. Maybe it's just because I've been reading a lot of nonfiction lately.

I guess, of the fiction I read the most recently, Anne and Captain Wentworth of Persuasion, which is probably my favorite of the Austen novels. A story of second chances, love lost through foolish choices and regained after they parted and grew and returned and still fit together so well. (And that denouement! The letter! Oh.)

Hmm, let's see. Probably my favorite fictional couple of all time is Ron and Hermione. They're just so awesome. Also, Alec and Magnus. I will cry if they don't end up together. And of course, Holly and Angela! I ship them so hard I may die. :D

If we're doing TV as well, then I have to say Amy and Rory from Doctor Who. There also seems to be a small part of me that ships Johnlock. (I have probably spent too much time on Tumblr at this point.)

Also, I am so excited to read UNTOLD, I just... can't even. :)

I'm currently all tangled up in the Science Bros community. (I have a community! I love the internet!)

On the off chance that you don't know about this, Science Bros is how we celebrate the friendship/bro-mance/romance/oh-God-please-let-them-be-a-couple of Tony Stark and Bruce Banner (as in the Avengers film.) There's a great deal of fan fiction being devoted to this right now.

I'm participating. Heavily.

The brilliant, narcissistic, isolated Tony Stark seeking the company of the reclusive, introspective, no-less-brilliant Bruce Banner? Gorgeous. The two "doing science" together? Breathtaking. When "Doing It For Science" turns into "Doing It For Love"? Heartwarming.

Science Bros... this is my happy place right now. Sigh.

Here's the bonus round:
Sherlock Holmes and John Watson. Always. Forever. Every incarnation.
But particularly the BBC Sherlock show. Swooooon. The episodes are wonderful and I just gobble them up while chanting, "Please be gay. Oh, dear Lord, PLEASE be gay. Be something other than a Kinsey Zero at least. HUG HIM RIGHT NOW..."

I have no shame.

I went to go read through this comment list and it was like "SPOILER*WACK*SPOILER*

While I love Forwood (yay Tyler's coming back! Those abs!), I'm like mostly hoping Caroline gets the urge to move to the Big Easy, because while the Vamp/Wolf dynamic frequently works, Hayley and Klaus? No thanks. Blondie softens Klaus from "absolutely evil" to "yeah you're an awful person but gosh joseph morgan you have adorable dimples and a sexy accent, so your attempts at being a good guy touch my heart." Other TV/movie notables: Beckett/Castle, and Olivia Benson/Elliot Stabler (ugh, if only....), Eugene/Rapunzel, Belle/Beast, Serena/Darien (Sailor Moon what up!)

Lizzie Bennet/Darcy (both of LBD and the original. Jane Austen FTW), Lucie Mannette/Sydney Carton, Benedick/Beatrice for (some of the infinite) the classics.

Childhood classics: The Harry/Hermione and Draco/Ginny combo was always my favorite, and I held out hope until past all reason for those, but alas. Diane/Numair from the Tortall series, closely followed by Alanna/George. Harry/Corlath (Blue Sword) and Sunshine/Constantine (Sunshine) both by Robin McKinley. Meliara/Vidanric (Crown&Court Duel)

More recent obsessions: Alexia Tarabotti/Conall Maccon (Parasol Protectorate). Malec (You DID make Cassie get them back together, right? RIGHT?!?). Not gonna lie, while I ship Kami/Jared, Holla has my strongest support!
