The Demon's Lexicon

Oh, you guys. Oh, you guys, I am so terrified.

So rejacketing a book is a very scary thing, because a) It means the whole series look has been totally changed! So the two sequels are going to look this way and b) It seems people did not like the old cover - oh please please please let them like this one!

I feel exceedingly lucky to have a lovely publisher, Simon & Schuster, who did not just say 'Oh well, Sarah RB, clearly a bust, next please' but who hired The Illustrious James Porto to make new covers for me.

And I feel even more lucky that when I went peeping to them with suggestions, and to my friends for thoughts, my publishers and friends both listened. (Which publishers in no way have to do. If they wanted a purple spacemonkey on my cover, they could have one no matter what I said! They are just very kind.) Especial thanks go to my friend Saundra Mitchell, whose artistic input was invaluable.

And this new cover is very different and dynamic and dramatic! And I think it has the feel of the book down, and - well, I will leave you to JUDGE FOR YOURSELVES.

In short, I hope you guys like it! *closes eyes and presses post*

I loved the old cover! It was so awesome and beautiful and brilliant!

Just to clarify, though - is this the new US cover? Because if it is - I can survive. For I am in South Africa, where we get the UK covers, and I deeply adore the UK covers!

Even though this cover is also kinda cool. I just don't like it as much as the one I have an actual copy of...

Also, we are still getting the Mae cover you showed us a while ago, right? Right?

To clarify what I was saying: I like this cover, it is very cool and more fitting than the US cover, but if it replaces the UK cover, I will cry long tears and drip on my keyboard and short out my computer and die of misery. Because I love me some of that Black-and-Red Almost-Sin-City kinda look. And I like it when all the books in a series look the same.

Re: But...But...
This is the US cover, yes, as it says on the cut. ;) And the Mae cover shown before is the UK sequel, so if you guys get the UK covers, that's what you'll get.

Oh dear.
I... don't like it. I want to, so badly! I really do! But I'm picky about covers in general, particularly ones with people on them (I really liked your post about object versus people covers, btw).

I just don't like the idea of the image of a character being portrayed before I ever pick up the book. It's like being told how you should think of Nick, when in my mind he's much more... I don't know... real. I couldn't picture him wearing a v-neck and eyeliner, for one thing.

That being said, I am absolutely in love with the story anyways, so I don't give a flying pig what the front looks like. :]

Action, swords and a rather nice coat. I like it!

...Plus I like the words 'shimmery' and 'bountiful'. I'm nothing if not easily amused.

I didn't think there was anything wrong with the old cover, but this one is definitely more unisex...so with boys being key to your story and/or audience, that's a plus. :) And the background is nifty--full of gloomth and paranormal-gothic.

I agree with whoever said he looks like young Johnny Depp. Not that that's a bad thing. Quite the contrary--it's a very GOOD thing. *halo*

The new cover is indeed awesome! It does capture the essence of the book very well. And because you released a new cover and I am anal about my books matching I will go buy a new copy of it as soon as the new cover hits the shelves.

P.S. will we still have the secret cover underneath?
Jan. 27th, 2010 08:49 am (UTC)
No, this is the paperback, so there will be no covers underneath. ;)

Am I the only one who liked the original cover? I ordered mine from the UK (I'm in Australia, and none of the shops I went to actually stocked it, it was a special order, and it was quicker and cheaper for me to order from The Book Depository than the bookstore). I had the choice of the paperback or the hardcover, and even though I prefer to read paperbacks (easier to read comfortably with)I chose the hardcover because of the pretty boy. There, I've said it *blush* :P

But on the plus side this will definitely appeal to more male readers than the original, and a wider demographic of readers is always good.

I quite agree he is pretty, and am happy to know some people liked the original, though very much hoping more people like the new one. ;)

I likey! (Although the secret sword is still my favourite ever!) ...And now I have to buy another copy of TDL so I have the complete set! XD

(Also, I am so pleased about ALAN possibly having a cover!!! *waves flags* And while I love Mae, I fully support the Sin cover, the YA section needs more covers with people of colour on them!)

Oh, that's gorgeous.
Jan. 27th, 2010 02:13 pm (UTC)
I like the action-y new cover! The new cover model reminds me of a young Johnny Depp. Excellent!

These type of covers aren't my favorite (the UK cover is more my style), but this makes me SOOOOOO excited! I haven't been able to get my brother to read the book because he often reads on trips with his soccer team, and he only had the ARC version (because my hardcover is signed, so my precious), and thus he refused to go around with a completely pretty boy on his cover. I was even considering letting him borrow my hardcover, but then if he liked it and wanted to recommend it to friends, he would have to admit that the real cover isn't a sword.

Badass guy wielding a sword on the other hand? Yeah, he'll be okay being seen with that.

...it'll probably be better for attracting teenage boys. And I think the girl market was probably covered by the hardcover, so... it's good to have a balance. Personally, being more of the girl persuasion, the paperback reminds me too much of Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles, but then, I've already bought the book in hardback. Three times.

Ooh, I love it! Maybe even enough to buy the pp even though I already have the hc. It is so perfect!

Well, I recently read it, Romance Novel cover or not-- also have asked for it in numerous bookstores I frequent, just hoping they will order more copies and people will give it a shot.

I really liked it, and I can't wait to see where you take the series next.

i think i liked the design of the old cover better but i like the guy on this cover better
(i will like the book no matter what the cover is really...so yeah^_^)
