The Demon's Lexicon

Oh, you guys. Oh, you guys, I am so terrified.

So rejacketing a book is a very scary thing, because a) It means the whole series look has been totally changed! So the two sequels are going to look this way and b) It seems people did not like the old cover - oh please please please let them like this one!

I feel exceedingly lucky to have a lovely publisher, Simon & Schuster, who did not just say 'Oh well, Sarah RB, clearly a bust, next please' but who hired The Illustrious James Porto to make new covers for me.

And I feel even more lucky that when I went peeping to them with suggestions, and to my friends for thoughts, my publishers and friends both listened. (Which publishers in no way have to do. If they wanted a purple spacemonkey on my cover, they could have one no matter what I said! They are just very kind.) Especial thanks go to my friend Saundra Mitchell, whose artistic input was invaluable.

And this new cover is very different and dynamic and dramatic! And I think it has the feel of the book down, and - well, I will leave you to JUDGE FOR YOURSELVES.

In short, I hope you guys like it! *closes eyes and presses post*

that is a SICK jacket! Holy crap! You know...the guy on the front almost reminds me of Johnny Depp in a weird way...um. Yeah. Now I wish the cover of my copy looked like that.:P

Yes! I can't tell for sure from the photo, but he looks a bit hollow-cheeked and sepulchral on top of everything else. Very spooky, no suggeston of saving puppies, will not scare the boys away. Home run!
Jan. 27th, 2010 09:49 pm (UTC)
Heh, sepulchral might scare away the ladies - let's hope not! ;)

I like this new cover much better than the original! and I'm a huge fan of paperback -- cheaper, easier to tote around w/ me. But honestly, I'm most miffed that every time I go to a B&N in the US, the YA section is devoid of any Demon's Lexicon for me to peruse!
Jan. 27th, 2010 10:10 pm (UTC)
Note: this B&N thing is particularly critical for me bc I cannot "start" a trilogy unless I know I have access to the ending, and I want to read your book! So weak, so so weak... *hangs head*

Very nice! I really like it :)

Oh, I do like it! Is this a new UK or US cover? US, please! I was sad that I liked the UK cover better than the US one but the US one was the one that was available in the bookstore... Now the debate is whether to buy this one as well because of the cover... What would I do with two copies of a book? Hm... birthday present? To... somebody? I know! the person who introduced me to your work! That was back in college. There I am, sprawled on her bedroom floor studying, and she starts chuckling while reading at her computer, and then starts reading aloud to me. Got me completely hooked with one scene. I'm glad you're now getting paid for your work. I bet she doesn't know you're now a published author. When does the new cover come out?
Jan. 28th, 2010 09:44 pm (UTC)
This is the new US look for the paperback, and it comes out in April. ;) I'm glad you like it!

Hm. Well. ....After some thinky thoughts I think I like it.
It has something of a movie poster and, indeed, it is very dynamic.
But I did like the first cover (of the english version) quite a lot.
Jan. 28th, 2010 10:20 pm (UTC)
Um, by the English version d'you mean the UK cover? Because that's not changing!
Jan. 29th, 2010 05:23 am (UTC)
Am I the only person who is willing to say that I don't like it?

The boy on the cover looks a bit anorexic; in fact, he looks like the type of boy who would wear eyeliner. Also, that is a very strange pose he's contorting himself into. And with the background, I feel like I'm staring at a screencap from the remake of Michael Jackson's Thriller MV. With swords.

This is not a personal attack on you in anyway, and I understand that authors really have no influence on cover designs. If anything I'm rather dismayed, as I really enjoyed reading The Demon's Lexicon, despite Tom Welling from Smallville being on the cover.
Jan. 29th, 2010 12:22 pm (UTC)
Damn! It's a young Johnny Depp in a graveyard with a sword!

Can I make an entry even if I´m living in Austria?

*love love love*!!!

The UK cover I feel has more subtle menace to it, so it is my favourite. However, that may be because it's vaguely abstracted.
This does look a little bit pulp-fiction, or possibly role-playing sourcebook. That said, it's not BAD by a long shot. I'm just more fond of subtle covers.

This is the YA genre, though, so overt is probably a good move. I'd still take a pause and glance at it, at least, because it has a different tone to it than most things I see.

Does this even make sense? >_>

Seriously Sarah, you write fabulously. Why can't you choose better covers?

Re: covers
I am not deleting this rude anonymous comment for one reason alone: in order to say to everyone that no author in this world chooses their covers.

I am neutral on this one, too--although this may be because I have the UK covers to compare to WHICH I LOVE, because they capture both the playful, romantic, and dark elements of the story.

The last cover was way romantic to the point of being girly, but this one seems much more serious, more like a standard fantasy cover designed to bring over the nerdy boys. (To test this, I made the man in my life look at the two separate covers. On the old, he said, "looks like a girl." On the new he said, "looks fine," and there was a nod involved, so I think it's definitely an improvement in that aspect.)

The texture is interesting. I'd be curious to see that in hard cover, because I think that some of the elements might "pop" with gilding and metallic detailing--are they doing any of that?

This must be so frustrating for you, the whole cover process.

*frowns thoughtfully* I think the boy's clothing and the cityscape makes it look like not-standard fantasy, but each to their own.

It is definitely frustrating that the cover is the very most important thing about a book and to one's career, and it is the one thing writers can't control. But I'll be happy if the new ones work! *fingers crossed*

This is the paperback, so it won't be in hard cover, but I believe there will be effects, though I'm not totally sure of what kind.

definitely more dynamic than the last color. I still haven't been able to get the cash together to buy your book. I'm like foaming at the mouth with need like a rabid squirrel.
