The Demon's Lexicon

Oh, you guys. Oh, you guys, I am so terrified.

So rejacketing a book is a very scary thing, because a) It means the whole series look has been totally changed! So the two sequels are going to look this way and b) It seems people did not like the old cover - oh please please please let them like this one!

I feel exceedingly lucky to have a lovely publisher, Simon & Schuster, who did not just say 'Oh well, Sarah RB, clearly a bust, next please' but who hired The Illustrious James Porto to make new covers for me.

And I feel even more lucky that when I went peeping to them with suggestions, and to my friends for thoughts, my publishers and friends both listened. (Which publishers in no way have to do. If they wanted a purple spacemonkey on my cover, they could have one no matter what I said! They are just very kind.) Especial thanks go to my friend Saundra Mitchell, whose artistic input was invaluable.

And this new cover is very different and dynamic and dramatic! And I think it has the feel of the book down, and - well, I will leave you to JUDGE FOR YOURSELVES.

In short, I hope you guys like it! *closes eyes and presses post*

Hmm ... I much prefer this cover to the old one (although I didn't have much of a problem with the old one either).

I love Nick no matter what he looks like. But this cover is pretty gorgeous.

OMG, so badass! Do not fuck with him or his sword or his coat or his jagged rocks! Seriously, I love it. So full of movement.

Okay, I have to admit, I started laughing when I saw it. BUT it was the good kind of laughter, and just because the pose is SO DRAMATIC. (Also I've been watching Supernatural lately, so I got lots of vibes for Sam and Dean.)

Truly though, I do think it's a MAJOR improvement. No more cheesy red glow and pouty lip!!! I'm thinking, in fact, I'm going to have to buy a copy of the US edition now although I already have the UK one. :)

...Lol, I just saw the zoomed-in version with the CRAZY EYES. :D And apparently designer jeans. Aw, no talisman included? But that's me being picky now.

Really, I'm glad they rejacketed it and made it more dignified, though still true to the book. And I do mean it about buying a US copy, perhaps when Covenant comes out.

So, in summary, yay!

I had my hopes on an object cover, simply for something different and abstract, but this had me pleasantly surprised. He gets across the feeling of Nick quite a bit better than lovely-yet-emo-hardcover Nick.

I particularly love the tornado. If I had not read this book I would currently be thinking, "But there is a tornado! Put down your sword and find cover!" Yet it's nice to be able to say to myself, "It's okay, the tornado is on HIS side."

It's okay, the tornado is on HIS side.

That should SO be on a t-shirt.

ooh, somehow I never thought we'd get a real live model!Nick. It makes me think about how the whole time I was reading, I thought about how well the book would work as a movie! (I'm still holding out hopes for a Devil's Lexicon Movie!!)

Also, I noticed in the comments, you're thinking about Alan for Book 3?? Can I vote an enthusiastic YES PLEASE! to that? I love Alan and I would love to see inside his head because it seems like while he has his facade of honesty, he hides so much about he true feelings and motivations and I feel like a window into that would be fascinating.

Using my pink haired Audrey Kitching icon in honor of Mae!

I'm afraid Sin is the narrator for book three: I'm thinking Alan for the cover, as Sin's already on the cover of book two. Plus, nice to have a cover for Alan. ;) I'm so glad you like him!

That looks lovely. And it's really encouraging your ideas were listened to.

(I'm in the early stages of rejacketing process, and it's exciting but also very very scary.)

By the way, hello, I have not yet read your novels but I will because I love, love, love your "Ladies, Please" post and if your writing is generally that good I'm sure I have a lot to look forward to.

As many others have said, this cover seems to convey the feel of the story much better than the US hardback did. The model for that cover, while pretty, had sort of this pouty 'I'm tortured and spend far too much time brooding' look going, whereas this new guy seems much more 'look, I'm a bit unstable, and totally ready to kick any ass that needs it, and I'm okay with causing mass distruction', which seems much more like the Nick I know and love.

(Also, Johnny Depp similarities? Not a bad thing. Makes me feel less dirty for appreciating him, as he looks like he's probably legal.)

I might actually get my 14 year old brother to read this version, without him thinking I'm trying to sneak something by him (I tried showing the secret cover, but he'd already seen the dust jacket).

Ten times better than the old one! I have to admit, I almost didn't read your book because the cover wasn't all that interesting. Your LJ posts convinced me to give it a chance and I'm so glad I read it!

Is that a young Johnny Depp I see before me, because YUM! No really, YUM!

Another great part about the Johnny Depp resemblance, is he still looks obscenely young/hot enough that he could actually play Nick in the movie version. :D

I think this is great! Not that the other one didn't have it's good points, but this one fits the book so very very well.

I think this is a great yays.

I like this a lot. And I think it will be easier to get my friends to read it. And I will not have to say "Don't judge me, this book is awesome" when people see me with it, because they will be able to take one look and know it for themselves!

Very dramatic. I like. Much more "dark and dangerous," much less "soft, pouty lips." If I knew nothing of the story I would certainly wonder what the heck a listing of words had to do with sword-wielding and demons. I would be intrigued and likely pick it up. :)

I think I will have to order the paperback too now when it comes out! I was already sorely tempted to buy a copy of the UK cover. I may yet. ;)
