The Demon's Lexicon

Oh, you guys. Oh, you guys, I am so terrified.

So rejacketing a book is a very scary thing, because a) It means the whole series look has been totally changed! So the two sequels are going to look this way and b) It seems people did not like the old cover - oh please please please let them like this one!

I feel exceedingly lucky to have a lovely publisher, Simon & Schuster, who did not just say 'Oh well, Sarah RB, clearly a bust, next please' but who hired The Illustrious James Porto to make new covers for me.

And I feel even more lucky that when I went peeping to them with suggestions, and to my friends for thoughts, my publishers and friends both listened. (Which publishers in no way have to do. If they wanted a purple spacemonkey on my cover, they could have one no matter what I said! They are just very kind.) Especial thanks go to my friend Saundra Mitchell, whose artistic input was invaluable.

And this new cover is very different and dynamic and dramatic! And I think it has the feel of the book down, and - well, I will leave you to JUDGE FOR YOURSELVES.

In short, I hope you guys like it! *closes eyes and presses post*

Generally, I'm not a fan of the photographic type cover, but I enjoy the actioniness of this! Thankfully, it doesn't look like a romance! I think boys were dubious of the US hardcover, because of the dreamy boy with the far-away look in his eye. Swords and storms are much more appealing!

I mostly like that the words "shimmery marvels" are now on the front of your book, because that is an awesome turn of phrase, and who doesn't love some shimmery marvels?

Sarah, I was looking for an essay you did on POV and surprises and there was a bit about the Attolia books, and I can't find it! Do you still have it?

As pretty as I think the original cover is ... it honestly never looked like Nick to me.

THIS, this looks like Nick.

Nice! Definitely better than the hardcover with the Nick who looked like a teen heartthrob, but my favorite, of course, is still the one where Nick looks like Roy Mustang.

by far a better feel for the book than the first one. [*nods*] that certainly feels more like nick to me. am glad they were willing to redo for you ♥

now i need to decide if i need the new cover as well [*ponders*]

Not so sure about how I feel towards this one. I think it more appropriately shows the darkness of the series (and Nick), but I liked the font type of the old cover better. I like the Scott Westerfield quote added in!

I like it!
I agree with you, this cover certainly is more in keeping with the whole atmosphere of the book. I like this a lot better than the previous US cover, mostly because the color scheme and graphics are cooler and more intense. And more mature. The last book looked like a YA book without doubt. This one just shouts Urban Fantasy. I don't know if that's what you were going for, but I think it's a good thing as DL is definitely urban fantasy-esque and would appeal to urban fantasy readers I think.

I hope your UK cover doesn't change, I still like that one the best!

*nods* Yeah, I like.

Crap... this means I have to get Demon's lexicon for the fourth time now ... *lol*
Geez .... but I want

I'm quite torn. I didn't love or hate the old cover, but I get so frustrated when covers are changed mid-series. I'm somewhat OCD about having a matching set (see: Suite Scarlett and Scarlett Fever by Maureen Johnson. The change wasn't bad, but I didn't find it necessary. And now they won't match! Woe!).

I don't doubt I'll get over it and come to love the new covers, though. It may just take some time.

Nick certainly looks dark and intense, which is fitting :)

Oh I hear you! : ) My OCD tendencies are thrown into overdrive when my bookshelves look unmatched. I am itching to re buy some books because the theme of the covers changed mid trilogy. City of Glass (Clare) and The Summoning (Armstrong) pained me in this way. *twitches*

This new cover is great!

I'm not going to lie, if I wasn't a fan of your writing to begin with, I might have been a little turned off by the old cover because it just seemed to aim at the same type of teeny-bopper girls who obsess over Twilight-- the whole pouty-hot-guy thing.

I feel like this one might get a much wider readership- it might appeal more to Young Adult boys and also the older range of young adult, like late teens. Great job! I'm glad they let you have input.

I also really loved your British paperback cover; the whole noir-comic look was fantastic.

Whoa! Low-resolution image was like, bam, young Johnny Depp. *drools*

I love it. I love his hand. I love the sword. I lol a little at his pointy knee, and the odd way he is twisting, BUT! I love it.

Does it not give you the greatest chill ever to see your name on the bottom of that cover? I don't think I'd ever get used to it. :) You're my hero, I so totally want to be you when I grow up. *g*

Awww yeah. Now that's the stuff. I'm not quite sure whether he looks scared or peeved, and I'm not sure whether he would know either. And is that a tornado I spy? No thunderstorms in the house! :D

Another "Eeek, it's Johnny Depp on the cover!" comment. Not the face of Nick I have in my head but certainly very easy on the eyes :) *fixates on his sword-less hand and stares*
I still prefer British cover, but than again I always like drawings on books better than photography.
