The Demon's Lexicon

Oh, you guys. Oh, you guys, I am so terrified.

So rejacketing a book is a very scary thing, because a) It means the whole series look has been totally changed! So the two sequels are going to look this way and b) It seems people did not like the old cover - oh please please please let them like this one!

I feel exceedingly lucky to have a lovely publisher, Simon & Schuster, who did not just say 'Oh well, Sarah RB, clearly a bust, next please' but who hired The Illustrious James Porto to make new covers for me.

And I feel even more lucky that when I went peeping to them with suggestions, and to my friends for thoughts, my publishers and friends both listened. (Which publishers in no way have to do. If they wanted a purple spacemonkey on my cover, they could have one no matter what I said! They are just very kind.) Especial thanks go to my friend Saundra Mitchell, whose artistic input was invaluable.

And this new cover is very different and dynamic and dramatic! And I think it has the feel of the book down, and - well, I will leave you to JUDGE FOR YOURSELVES.

In short, I hope you guys like it! *closes eyes and presses post*

OMG YES!!!!!!!!! It is probably a better representation and is a little darker. Then the other one.

I also love the Scott Westerfeld review on the top.

I love it! I have a soft spot in my heart for "original" covers, so I'll always prefer the old one, but this is definitely one wicked cover.

I didn't comment on the last one because there was no point and it seemed mean but I too didn't like the first cover and was somewhat embarrassed to have it displayed (which I easily solved by removing the cover and displaying lovely sword cover).

If (to me, strictly IMO) the first cover was mildly bad then this is positively medium. I like the background but the figure looks awkward. So the next book could have the same feel but get to the awesome level, maybe a more simple look? *crosses fingers*

Hoping very much for your commercial success due to selfish reasons!

"I like the background but the figure looks awkward."
Looks as if neither the artist nor the model knew how to swing a sword. Or understood what a real sword weighs. But then, I thought the hardcover dustjacket was more than mildly bad. But then, I'm old.

Just for the record, I would buy your book if there was a purple spacemonkey on the cover.

Hmmm, lovely! It looks less YA, though, which I presume is intentional? I still like the UK one better, but I'll put this in my mind for when I'm browsing bookstores! Lovely!

Now, THAT'S a Nick!
Oh, way better than that sparkledemon on the hardcover jacket! It's YA, but it won't embarass an old person into claiming she's buying it for a non-existent grandchild...

Dude- how did they get a young Johnny Depp for your cover?

while I like this cover (though I can't decide if I like it better than the old one or not...) I am the kind of person who is a bit obsessive over series and trilogies matching and so am sad that the rest of the books will not match my copy. I HATE when covers get changed in the middle of a series.

That being said, as a former bookseller and someone learning about the publishing industry, I can definitely appreciate why they decided to change the cover and think it will help the book sell better in the YA market

Oh yes. A huge improvement, and as everyone else has said, much truer to the contents.

Personally, I like the old one better. That said, people do judge a book by its cover, and this says "spooky supernatural action thriller sort of book." Actually think that it says that a bit more than the old jacket. So It's also a bit more eye-catching. It may do better. Which would be good of course.

Hahahahhaa! I don't know - I've never been a real big fan of the real-people-photo covers, they look funny to me. What is he doing with his hand? And the dramatic flare! The way he's posed makes me giggle.

Having said that, I think it's much better than the other one, and the background is very very cool, especially the twister. ^_^
