The Map Of My Heart

Originally published at Sarah Rees Brennan. You can comment here or there.

So, I have a Thing To Announce!

Theo Black, fabulous artist, who did a map of Tamora Pierce’s Tortall, also drew me a map for the fictional English town of Unspoken, Sorry-in-the-Vale. It is MOST FANCY, and has things like the Hope Well, and the library, and other streets like Shadowchurch Lane which are in the second book…

And this map will be given out with Unspoken at the signing I have on Sunday at Powell’s, the lovely bookshops where Unspoken is a fall staff favourite!!! And where I will be appearing with other AWESOME LADIES.

Panel: Women in Speculative Fiction for Young Adults

Join us this afternoon for a panelist discussion between five female fantasy writers of novels for young adults. Participants include: Cindy Pon (Silver Phoenix), Mette Ivie Harrison (Tris and Izzie), Sarah Rees Brennan (Unspoken), Malinda Lo (Adaptation), Janni Lee Simner (Bones of Faerie).
Sunday, October 14th @ 2pm Powell’s Books at Cedar Hills Crossing
3415 SW Cedar Hills Blvd. (800) 878-7323

Unspoken is buyabibble from the Powells website or you could come to the signing or call/email the Cedar Hills shop, to make sure your Unspoken comes with map and also a signature and whatever you’d like me to say. (I probably shouldn’t draw pictures, given my lack of artistic SKILLZ, but I will if you really want me to. ;) )

I will add this: The cover of Unspoken is definitely changing for the paperback. I am sorry, as nobody loves that cover more than me, but c’est la vie, and Random House has been awesome to me so far, so I’m thinking the next cover will be lovely too. However, if you like this cover, now’s the time to get it.

In other news, I am interviewed by a very smart lady at tor.com here: Sarah Rees Brennan and Sleeping with Monsters… where I talk about ladies, and writing, and other such things. As is my way. At length. As is my way…

Oh a map, how exciting! I'm sad that I'm not anywhere near Powells!

Will it make an appearance on the cover of your next book? *wink wink* *nudge nudge*

Can always order...

A map on the cover? I don't think so, no. ;) But I am sure the cover will be nice!

I want a map :(

Also, I will be SO SO SAD to see the cover go. Does this mean that the cover of Untold will be different? I hate when series hardbacks have different covers. (See fit pitched in April re: Curseworkers)

Also, you will appreciate this conversation I had with my mother today

Mom: I am still obsessed with Veronica Mars. They need to make a movie or something to tie everything up!
Me: You and the rest of the universe. I figure it's okay, they'll do it one day. It's not like Kristen Bell ages.
Mom: ....True.

So cool!

Do you know if I'll be able to order the book + the map internationally? And if so, do I need to be in contact with the shop specifically to make sure I'll get the map? I already got one copy of Unspoken, but I NEED the map. :)

My gosh thank you... probably best to be in contact with the shop specifically, I'd hate for you not to get it! I don't have them myself or I would send!

Are you going to the Powell's on Burnside in Portland, OR, too? Or just the one in Beaverton?
Oct. 10th, 2012 12:13 am (UTC)
Just Beaverton!

I cannot believe you will be on the west coast (Portland) and I will not (again). I should never, ever have moved away from home because this is the second time I've missed an event you've been to out there. Boo on me ... I hope you enjoy the west coast though. It's pretty nifty!

I'm really looking forward to this! I've been to events like this at Powell's Bvtn & they're always a blast, even when they don't include one of my favorite authors. I hope you have fun!

I had my copy on pre-order so I could start reading on release day, but I really want that map ...
Oct. 10th, 2012 03:50 am (UTC)
Will the maps be available anywhere else? If not, can you smuggle one down to Charleston for me?

OH WAIT MY FAMILY STILL LIVES DOWN THAT WAY. Over that way. And a bit up that way, actually. Definitely not down that way. Unfortunately they're all busy adults with their own lives but mayyyyybe my dad...

Mom says she can probably make it! *cheers*

Writers are like vampires, we go where invited. ;) But yay for you being there!

Sad news about the cover, I think my hardcover Unspoken is the most beautiful book that I own. I am not just saying that. When it arrived in the mail I ooh'd and aah'd over it extensively. See, I said to my husband, this is why I can't have a Kindle! I need books! Books are beautiful, especially this one!

It would have been awesome to have another amazing piece of art like that for the 2nd and 3rd books as well...but oh well, I guess given the penchant for all publishers to prioritize copying whatever the latest bestseller was over artistic vision, it was still amazing to have gotten it for the first one.

Are the maps exclusive to that store and that signing? Or are they perhaps going to be available at other events? Like YALLfest????????

Because I will be there!!!!!!!!!
Oct. 10th, 2012 02:44 pm (UTC)
I think the map is exclusive to this signing, yes.

The art is beautiful, and my publishers not to blame, but... yeah. The first priority is having the book in bookshops. Otherwise, well, the books don't sell, and I change my name. Which is OK, and something I am looking into, but I'd be really sad for the Lynburn Legacy series because I love it!

Looking forward to seeing you at YAllfest, then. ;)

So, if a person has already bought a copy of Unspoken (impatience, it could be my middle name) and plans to come to the panel and signing in Beaverton, would that person also be able to get a map? (And also, if said person were to bring other works by you -a small selection, perhaps two- could those also be signed? I do expect I will be buying other books at Powells that afternoon, for I have never left that place of wonder yet without new books and I anticipate being wowed by all the panelists...)

Either way, looking very much forward to Sunday!
Oct. 10th, 2012 02:42 pm (UTC)
I don't know because the maps are not mine but Powells, but I will sign any book that is brought unto me! I can also forge other people's signatures... ;) Not that I WOULD...
Oct. 10th, 2012 09:47 pm (UTC)
The cover is the snazziest! So snazzy I bought the official UK edition, read it twice, gave it to the girl over the road and ordered the pretty pretty version from America...

But publishers know best, probably, regrettably. And that map sounds amazing! It's a shame I live in the Cotswolds... ;-)
Oct. 10th, 2012 10:59 pm (UTC)
Especially as the Cotswolds have all those pesky murders. ;)

I am sad because I am all about non-photographic covers. But I am also completely in favor of Sarah having a career, so I shall deal.

(I really really really hope you do not have to change your name, or at least are able to announce that you're doing so, so I can obsessively scour the internet keep an eye out. Though again, obviously, Sarah having a career is a good thing.)
Oct. 11th, 2012 04:01 pm (UTC)
OH. I completely forgot to say! I LOVED that interview at Tor.com--I thought it was brilliant, especially the part about adults reading YA.
