The Turn of the Story, Part VI

Originally published at Sarah Rees Brennan. You can comment here or there.

Since last we spoke, I finished the Lynburn Legacy series, wrote an article on sexism in the Toast (super excited to be hosted by the Toast, and Malinda Lo wrote an awesome companion article about homophobia as well as sexism), and went on tour round England with Holly Black, and met some of you excellent people. A few of you even mentioned liking Turn of the Story, and I was so pleased.

So… here is more. This part is for Seanan McGuire, because she said she liked it, and because Parasite by Mira Grant is recently out, and it was fabulously awesome and I wish to celebrate it. 😉

Omg, I love this story so much! I want to read more stories with queer characters from you!
I knew Luke was gay all along because I thought he liked Elliot. I've just seen so much subtext for it and while I still believe that's true, from reading some of your replies I've got the feeling that that's not the case… WHY MUST I ALWAYS FALL FOR NON-CANON SHIPS OH WHYY?
I was surprised when he said he liked Dale because, honestly, I thought he just ignored him while Dale followed him around everywhere.
Anyway, I LOVE Serene. Oh gosh, all the feminist things she says. And they DO make so much sense! I love Elliot. And I love Luke! Omg the Peter thing was so funny! Well, really there are endless moments of hilarity in this story, much like everything else I've read from you. Ah, I just love these characters so much! I really cannot wait to read more!

Well all my stories so far are stories with queer characters, so you are in luck there. ;)

I am so glad that that you like it, however! Some of the things Serene says do make a lot of sense to me, but I sometimes wake up on the misandrist side of the bed. And I am always most happy when I make people laugh.

Oh my god,its been so long since you've updated this story. WHY ARE YOU DOING THIS TO ME?!!!

I noticed that someone else mentioned the Luke short story as if they had read a snippet or something for it. Does said snippet exist somewhere else? And is the story coming out in Monstrous Affections a sequel to Turn of the Story, or is it more like the final chapter?

After reading this story a second time, and going through all the comments, and your responses to comments, I have new predictions!
1 - Since you have said no one has gotten Luke quite right yet, I'm changing my theory, to that maybe he used to like Elliot, but now he does not. Which makes me more more than a little sad, since I'd really like to see a polyamorous relationship work out between the 3 of them, but c'est la vie. They have a lovely friendship anyway, and I think it would be just perfect if Elliot at the end actually told Luke that they were friends. Because that would be adorable.
2 - because you enjoy giving your readers pain and doing the unexpected, is that Elliot and Serene will get interrupted from their passionate interlude because they are A) in some random tent that probably belongs to someone else who will show up right before things get really good and B) because things are going too well for Elliot at the moment, and you wouldn't be you if you didn't write Elliot into some awkward and embarrassing scenario.

However, I still maintain that because you are emphasizing Dale's upcoming role (and again, citing your love for confused intentions and awkward scenarios), he thinks that Elliot is the one with the crush, and it becomes this weird misunderstanding where everyone thinks Elliot likes Dale, and Dale likes Elliot, and it takes a whole lot of not-tact to sort it all out. Because that's Elliot's specialty - even if he is trying to be more mature.

In any case, ahhhh I just want more :)

The story in Monstrous Affections works as a sequel, I think--it's Luke's emotional arc rather than Elliot's, and it stands alone. But it's conflizzing as had I written a book proper it would all've been the same story, so reader mileage may vary!

Your predictions are interesting. ;)

I have re-read Turn of the Story…again. I am so happy to hear that we will have more by September! (I was going to say "I'm so happy to hear that we will have all of it by September," but the thought of its end saddens me so that I decided to rephrase :D. ) Thanks for continuing to write our present, Sarah!
